NDIS Assistive Technology Assessment

From everyday aids to complex AT equipment, our AHPRA-registered Occupational Therapists assess your needs, trial appropriate technology, and prepare the clinical evidence your NDIS plan requires.

What is Assistive Technology — and do you need an OT?

Assistive Technology (AT) includes any piece of equipment, tool or system that helps a person with disability to participate in daily life with greater independence, safety and confidence.

Under the NDIS, AT is funded across a spectrum from low-cost items (grab rails, bath seats) through to complex, custom-prescribed equipment (power wheelchairs, AAC devices, smart home technology).

For mid-range and complex AT, the NDIS requires a supporting assessment from a qualified health professional — typically an Occupational Therapist. Our OTs assess your functional needs, trial appropriate options, and prepare the clinical justification the NDIA requires for approval.

How our AT assessment process works

  1. Referral & Intake

We review your referral and confirm the AT need, scope, budget category, and any existing equipment.

  2. Needs Assessment

An in-home or clinical assessment to understand how your disability impacts daily function and what AT could support independence.

  3. Trial & Prescription

We source and trial appropriate AT options with you, assess fit and function, and identify the best solution for your needs.

  4. Clinical Report & Justification

We prepare a thorough AT report with clinical reasoning that meets NDIA evidence requirements for approval.

  5. Ongoing Review

Equipment needs change. We're available for review assessments as your circumstances or NDIS plan evolves.

Prescribed by qualified OTs — backed by clinical evidence

The NDIS requires AT assessments to be completed by qualified allied health professionals. AHPRA registration ensures your OT is accountable, insured and operating within a professional and ethical framework.

Our AT reports are prepared to meet NDIA evidence requirements — meaning clearly documented clinical reasoning, functional justification, and evidence of trialling where appropriate. We prepare reports that give your AT application the best possible chance of approval.

Frequently asked questions about AT assessments

Does my NDIS plan need to already include AT funding?
Not always. If you believe you need AT but don't have funding for it yet, an initial OT assessment can identify the need and support you to request AT funding in your next plan review. We can help document the clinical evidence required to make that case to the NDIA.
Can my OT prescribe any type of AT?
OTs are well-positioned to assess and prescribe a broad range of AT. For some specialised items (e.g., hearing aids, orthotics), you may also need a specialist provider. We'll advise at intake if additional professionals need to be involved in your assessment.
How long does an AT assessment take?
This depends on the complexity of your needs. A basic AT assessment may take 1–2 hours. Complex AT assessments, including trials across multiple sessions, can take significantly longer. We'll give you a clear time and cost estimate at intake before we begin.
Who pays for the AT assessment?
In most cases, the assessment cost is funded through your NDIS Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living budget. For complex AT, there may be provision within your Capital Supports budget. We confirm the funding arrangement at intake so there are no surprises.
What if my AT application is rejected by the NDIA?
We prepare thorough, evidence-based reports to maximise approval likelihood. If the NDIA requests additional information or a review, we're available to provide supplementary clinical evidence to support your case. Reach out and we'll work with you on next steps.
Can you help with smart home or AAC technology?
Yes. Our OTs have experience assessing complex communication needs (AAC) and smart home/environmental control systems. These are assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on the technology involved and your functional needs. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
